Maintenance Division

The Maintenance Division has five skilled sections – Road Transportation, Traffic Safety, Flood Protection, Pump Stations, and Drawbridges – All dedicated to the task of making Alameda County a safe place to live and work.

The Road Transportation section maintains 480 center line miles of roadway and county right of ways. Major tasks include; guardrail repair, fence repair, pothole patching, shoulder repair, storm repair and cleanup, weed control, tree trimming, street sweeping, debris removal, chip seal, pavement repairs, crack filling, culvert cleaning-repair-replace, community service requests, provide support for the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and 24/7 emergency response.

Traffic Safety (Traffic Signals and Street Lights) – Provide emergency service and routine maintenance of 78 traffic signals in the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Livermore and Pleasanton. Provide Emergency service and routine maintenance of 95 traffic signals through contract for the Cities of Dublin, Piedmont and Albany. Perform monthly and bi-monthly maintenance operations to ensure that all equipment is operating as intended, re-lamp on a scheduled basis. Repair or replace damage caused by accidents or vandalism.

Provide emergency service and routine maintenance of 7,000 streetlights in the unincorporated areas of Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Livermore and Pleasanton. Provide Emergency service and routine maintenance of 12,000 streetlights through contract for the Cities of Dublin, Hayward, Piedmont, Albany and the University of California East Bay. Perform maintenance operations to ensure that all equipment is operating as intended. Repair or replace damage caused by accidents or vandalism. Provide Inspection services on new construction for Alameda County and for Cities under contract.

Signs and Striping – There are approximately 45,000 road signs within the unincorporated areas of Alameda County. This division maintains repairs and replaces these signs and also installs new signs when requested by the County Traffic Engineer. They are also responsible for painting traffic lines, cross walk painting, curb painting, sign review, accident repairs, graffiti removal on signs and the replacement of missing or broken pavement markers and delineators.

The Flood Protection section maintains 550 miles of flood control creeks, channels, and culverts in an effort to maximize capacities of our facilities and protect properties from flooding. Major tasks include; levee repair, silt basin maintenance, weed control, tide gate maintenance, concrete structure repair, vegetation removal, de-silting, fence repairs and emergency response.

The Pump Station section operates 22 storm water lift stations that are located in the western part or low –laying flood plain areas of the County. Two of these sites protect a roadway underpass in San Lorenzo and the other on Pleasanton-Sunol Road. These pump stations operate all year round to direct the collected storm water, ground water, irrigation drainage, and transient street runoff and transfer that water to flood control bays and channels. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) has been in operation since 2006 for remote operation and monitoring of the pump stations. Pump Station staff performs Preventive Maintenance, Electrical and Mechanical Repairs all year to ensure flood protection.
